Did you know that marine diesel engines are remarkably long-lived?  Provided they are properly maintained, a marine diesel can last for more than 5,000 hours!  The key here are the words PROPERLY MAINTAINED.  A lot of boats I have worked on have suffered from some neglect from time to time; which can lead to very expensive damage in a matter of seconds; or worse!  Many boat owners are either unaware of proper maintenance cycles or are unprepared to maintain their engines themselves.
