I am an Accredited Marine Surveyor with the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors (SAMS®) and a member of the International Institute of Marine Surveying (IIMS). I have achieved the Master Technician designation by the American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC). There are many people who claim to be “Accredited” or “Licensed” in Ontario who will perform surveys for as little as $8/foot – but be careful…yacht surveying is highly un-regulated; and (as with many things in life) you get what you pay for! I have met many disappointed boat owners who bought boats only to find out that they were less than seaworthy and required an extensive re-fit which was not reflected in the pre-purchase survey they commissioned.
I will perform a detailed in- and/or out-of-the-water inspection of your boat and provide a comprehensive report of the state of the boat's electrical systems, mechanical and propulsion systems, plumbing, electronics, rigging, hull (both above and below waterline), deck, and safety equipment. I will take moisture readings and use percussive sounding to detect defects within the fiberglass hull; defects which are not visible to the eye and which the owner may not even be aware of.
My report will provide a detailed description including (but not limited to) such things as:
The findings of a pre-purchase survey can often be used to negotiate down the asking price of the boat. Many deficiencies are not apparent to the untrained eye; and a purchase without a professional comprehensive survey can cost the buyer a lot more money down the road.

Most - if not all - insurance companies will require a recent survey before you can insure the boat. A pre-purchase survey will help ensure that the investment you are about to make is a good one. The findings of a pre-purchase survey can often be used to negotiate down the asking price of the boat. Many deficiencies are not apparent to the untrained eye; and a purchase without a professional comprehensive survey can cost the buyer a lot more money down the road.
You should get a survey before you finalize the purchase of a used boat. Most insurance companies also require a survey every 5 or 10 years. Since qualified Marine Surveyors are in demand in the GTA, it is wise to book your Survey well in advance. Wait times are usually measured in terms of weeks rather than days.
Surveys include pre-purchase, insurance, and damage assessment; all of which have varying fees and areas of focus.
Are they a member of a professional marine survey association? What accreditations do they carry? How many surveys do they complete annually? Do they have experience with engines, composite materials, or electrical systems? Ask for a sample survey report.
Depending on the scope of the Survey and the size/type of boat, expect the Surveyor to be on-board for two- to three-hours...perhaps more if a sea-trial is involved or if the boat needs to be moved to a marine travel-lift for an out-of-the-water inspection of the boat below the waterline.
The boat should reasonably clear so that lockers and hatches can be accessed for internal inspection. Below deck should be tidy so storage lockers, batteries, engine, pumps, etc can be readily accessed. The bilge(s) should be reasonably clean. Please DO NOT wash the top-sides the day of the inspection. If possible, I recommend turning-off/disconnecting any battery charging systems (i.e. shore power connection, solar, or wind) eight hours prior the inspection (if possible). Most Surveyors will request a copy (paper or electronic) of the boat's registry documents. Most surveys require an inspection below the waterline, so it is recommended to book a "lift and hang" at a local marina or yacht club.
